How Do I Look Up Warrants in Ohio?

OhioCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on OhioCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

You can use OhioCourts.us to locate a warrant in Ohio, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Ohio's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. A search may reveal the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, when available.

Ohio has 88 counties, each with its own Court of Common Pleas, clerk of courts, and sheriff's office — and there is no unified statewide portal where the public can search active warrants across all of them at once. Some county clerks offer online docket searches (Franklin County's Case Information Online and Cuyahoga County's Case Records Search are among the more developed systems), while others provide no remote access at all. The Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) maintained by the Ohio Department of Public Safety does aggregate warrant entries statewide, but access is restricted to criminal justice agencies. For the general public, that leaves an 88-county patchwork with no single point of entry.

That fragmentation is what makes a consolidated lookup resource valuable in Ohio specifically. A person who does not know which county issued a warrant — or who may have matters pending in more than one jurisdiction — would otherwise need to contact dozens of clerks or sheriff's offices individually to piece together a complete picture.

Are Warrants Public Information in Ohio?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants are, in most circumstances, public records once they have been filed with a court. Ohio's Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio, specifically Sup. R. 45(A), establish a presumption that all court records are open to public access. The rule requires courts and clerks to "make a court record available by direct access, promptly acknowledge any person's request for direct access, and respond to the request within a reasonable amount of time." That presumption applies to case documents — which includes warrants, docket entries, and the associated affidavits and orders filed in a criminal case — unless a court has specifically restricted access under Sup. R. 45(E).

Separately, Ohio's Public Records Act, ORC § 149.43, grants "any person" the right to inspect records held by public offices and requires those records to be "promptly prepared and made available." Unlike states that impose a fixed response deadline (five business days, ten business days), Ohio law requires only that the office respond "promptly" — a standard the Ohio Attorney General's office has described as dependent on the volume and complexity of the request.

Search warrants occupy a different category. Before execution and return, a search warrant and its supporting affidavit are sealed from public view to protect the integrity of the investigation. Even after return, the affidavit may remain sealed by court order if the investigation is ongoing. Warrants connected to sealed indictments, grand jury proceedings, or juvenile cases are similarly withheld. So while the legal default in Ohio favors disclosure, a meaningful share of warrant-related records remain inaccessible at any given time.

How to Search for a Warrant in Ohio

  1. Search OhioCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
  2. Search county court portals directly. Ohio does not offer a single statewide court records search for the public. Instead, each county's Clerk of Courts operates its own system. Franklin County's Case Information Online and Hamilton County's Records Search are free to use and cover Common Pleas and Municipal Court dockets. Cuyahoga County, Summit County, and many others offer similar portals. Not all counties have online access, and those that do vary widely in what they include — some display active warrants on the docket; others list only case filings and dispositions.
  3. Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name and date of birth ready. If you know the county where the case may have originated, start there. The clerk's office can confirm whether an outstanding warrant appears on the docket, and the sheriff's office can confirm whether the warrant has been entered into LEADS for service.
  4. Visit in person. A clerk of court's office will permit inspection of public case files during business hours. Be aware that if you are inquiring about a warrant issued in your own name, presenting yourself at a law enforcement office may result in arrest on the spot.
  5. Retain an attorney. An attorney can make inquiries discreetly, determine the warrant's status, and advise on how to proceed — including the possibility of arranging a voluntary surrender.

How Long Is a Warrant Active in Ohio?

Felony arrest warrants and bench warrants in Ohio do not expire. They remain active until the person is apprehended, the warrant is recalled by the issuing judge, or the underlying case is otherwise resolved. Ohio does, however, have a statutory provision that distinguishes it from most states: under ORC § 2935.10(F), when a misdemeanor warrant or summons has not been served within two years of issuance, a judge or magistrate may order it withdrawn and the case closed — but only when "the ends of justice" do not require keeping the case open. This is discretionary, not automatic. Search warrants are governed by Ohio Criminal Rule 41(C), which commands execution within three days of issuance — one of the shorter execution windows in the country.

Ohio Warrant Records by County

Warrants in Ohio are issued and maintained at the county level. Each of the state's 88 counties has a Court of Common Pleas (General Division) that handles felony criminal matters, along with a municipal or county court that covers misdemeanors and minor offenses. The clerk of courts in each county maintains case records, including warrant docket entries. Ohio has no centralized public warrant database; the LEADS system links law enforcement agencies statewide but is not available for public queries. A county-by-county approach is the only reliable method for public searches.
