Erie County sits along the Lake Erie shoreline in northern Ohio, with Sandusky as its county seat. The county's judicial system is spread across several courts: the Erie County Court of Common Pleas — which includes a General Division, a Domestic Relations Division, a Juvenile Division, and a Probate Division — along with the Sandusky Municipal Court, the Erie County Municipal Court, and the Vermilion Municipal Court. Each court keeps its own records, ranging from felony criminal proceedings in the General Division all the way down to small claims matters at the municipal level. The Erie County Clerk of Courts is the official record keeper for the Common Pleas Court and the Sixth District Court of Appeals, while each municipal court clerk independently manages its own files.
Ohio offers several ways to find court case data. Many clerk offices provide in-person access, and a number of counties have built their own online case-lookup tools. The Erie County Clerk of Courts maintains a Public Information Case System for Common Pleas records, and each municipal court offers its own search options. If you need to search across jurisdictions, OhioCourts.us can help you identify publicly available court case information from courts throughout Ohio.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Erie County?
Where you start your search depends on which court handled the case. Erie County operates several courts at different locations, and each runs its own records system.

Online Search Options
The Clerk of Courts operates the Public Information Case (PIC) System, where you can search civil, criminal, and domestic relations case records from the Court of Common Pleas. Searches are available by party name, case number, case type, filing date, or date of birth. Keep in mind that case images from 2000 through 2009 may have gaps, and there are no images at all from 2009 through February 2013. Domestic relations case images are not available through the PIC System.
For Erie County Municipal Court cases, the online record search and payment portal lets you search by name, ticket number, or case number. The Vermilion Municipal Court record search offers a similar tool, and the Sandusky Municipal Court record search covers cases within its jurisdiction.
The Erie County Probate Court maintains its own record search on its website, covering estates, guardianships, adoptions, and other probate matters.
In-Person Requests
The Clerk of Courts office at 323 Columbus Avenue, First Floor, is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bring a case number or party name when you visit to request a case file review. Court costs for Common Pleas cases can also be paid online.
Are Court Records Public in Erie County?
Ohio has a strong tradition of open government. Under Section 149.43 of the Ohio Revised Code, the definition of a public record is broad — it covers records kept by any public office, including courts. The statute requires that public records be made available for inspection and copying within a reasonable time. Rule 45 of the Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio reinforces this by establishing a presumption of public access to court records and directing clerks to make records available both in person and remotely.
That said, not every court document is open to the public. The Ohio Revised Code and the Rules of Superintendence exclude several categories from public access:
- Medical records filed as part of court proceedings
- Trial preparation records
- Confidential law enforcement investigatory records
- Adoption records, which are sealed upon finalization
- Mental health commitment records
- Records related to Adult Protective Services
- Probation and parole proceedings documents
- Certain juvenile records subject to confidentiality rules
- Records sealed by court order or through the expungement process
- Information whose release would infringe on an individual's privacy rights or would not serve the public interest
Rule 44 of the Rules of Superintendence provides additional guidance on what qualifies as a court record, including administrative documents. If you are seeking records, note that the PIC System specifically excludes domestic relations case images, and certain sensitive case types may be restricted at the clerk's discretion or by judicial order.
Erie County Criminal Court Records
Criminal cases in Erie County are split among several courts based on the severity of the charge. Felonies are prosecuted in the General Division of the Court of Common Pleas. Searching Criminal Case Records
Felony criminal records are kept by the Clerk of Courts and searchable through the PIC System. Use the case type filter for criminal cases, then enter a name or case number. Records posted through the PIC System reflect a minimum 24-hour delay from the time of filing.
