Geauga County occupies the northeastern corner of Ohio, with the village of Chardon serving as the county seat. The county’s court system includes a Court of Common Pleas—divided into General, Domestic Relations, and Probate/Juvenile divisions—and the Chardon Municipal Court. Together, these courts generate and maintain records spanning felony and misdemeanor prosecutions, civil lawsuits, domestic relations proceedings, juvenile matters, estate filings, and traffic cases. The Clerk of Courts for the Court of Common Pleas and the Clerk of the Chardon Municipal Court each serve as the official custodian for records created within their respective courts.
Ohio court records held in Geauga County can be located through several avenues. The Clerk of Courts and the Municipal Court both offer free online case-search portals, and public-access terminals are available inside the courthouse for visitors who prefer to search in person. Written and telephone requests are accepted as well. For broader research across the state, OhioCourts.us may help users find publicly available case information and connect with county-level court resources. Because different offices hold different types of records—court filings with the clerks, arrest reports with the Sheriff, vital records with Geauga Public Health—identifying the correct custodian before submitting a request saves both time and effort.

Are Court Records Public in Geauga County?
Ohio’s Public Records Act (R.C. § 149.43) establishes that records maintained by public offices—including courts—are presumptively open to inspection and copying. Any person may request public records without providing identification or explaining their purpose.
When a record contains both disclosable and exempt material, the custodian must redact the exempt portions and release the remainder. The Geauga County Clerk of Courts applies this principle by routinely redacting sensitive identifiers from copies sent electronically or by mail; requesters who need unredacted versions must appear in person with a photo ID.
Categories of records typically exempt from disclosure include:
- Adoption proceedings and related filings
- Sealed records (including expungements granted under R.C. Chapter 2953)
- Juvenile delinquency case files (unless relevant to an adult prosecution)
- Confidential law enforcement investigatory records
- DNA records and genetic test results
- Medical records and protected health information
- Attorney-client privileged communications
- Trade secrets, proprietary business data, and intellectual property filings
- Trial preparation records compiled in anticipation of litigation
- Personal information protected by specific statutes (e.g., Social Security numbers, certain financial data)
The Ohio Attorney General’s office publishes guidance on the Public Records Act, including a comprehensive list of statutory exemptions. Individuals who believe a custodian has improperly denied access may file a complaint with the Ohio Court of Claims or seek a writ of mandamus.
